JAKE & OREO - AUG. 2008 : Here are some updated images of Oreo and Jake. As you might notice Oreo has picked up a few proky pines quills. Not sure when she ran afoul of the little critter but she
sure looks funny, and I'm sure they are quite uncomfortable. Zoo keepers were going to to attempt to remove them today.

UPDATE FROM THE INDY ZOO : The brown bears formerly known as Rosie and Rover are settling in nice at their new home at the Indianapolis Zoo.
They recently came out of quarantine and are getting acquainted with their new exhibit.

Following is some information provided by Judith Gagen, Dir. of Communications for the Zoo.

Their names have been changed to protect the innocent. :)

Kiak (KEY'ACK) for the female, which means summer, and K'etnu (KETT'-NEW) for the male, which means river. Our keepers tend to pick names that honor the range countries of our animals.

The photos show them getting acquainted with the exhibit. As you can see, they have gained LOTS of weight and their coats are all fluffy for the winter.
Estimated weights are about 125 pounds each. The shaved patch of K'etnu's foreleg was for the IV when they castrated him. They figured as long as they
were in the vet hospital, better to get it over with so they wouldn't have to bring him back in later. So far, so good. Kiak is cautious around people, but very
bold in exploring. K'etnu is more boisterous, initiates most of the play and loves to run around the exhibit. They have already learned husbandry behaviors
such as putting their feet up and down, stationing on a target and presenting open mouths, hips and feet for vet exams.

Indianapolis photos are courtesy of Jackie Curts, the Area Manager in the Encounters Biome. The last two images were provided by Tim Ardillo.

A TRASHY PROBLEM : The Alaska Dept. of F&G brought a bear proof container out to the zoo to see if our 2 black bears could break into it.

Try as they might the containers worked as advertised and they were unable to get at the contents.

However when a garbage can, like the ones most people use on trash day, was placed in the enclosure it too exactly 11 seconds for the bears to make entry and get they reward.

OCTOBEARFEST 2007 - BLACK BEARS : As part of the Octobearfest celebration at the Alaska Zoo our black bears were provided with 'enrichments'. From looking at the images one may think that the enrichment consisted merely of a garbage can filled with trash. This is absolultely not so.

The can contained specific food groups, favorites of the bears, and they had to use their ingenuity to get at some of the rewards.

BLACK BEAR MOVING DAY : Zayk and Mavis moved into their new home today, the enclosure formerly occupied by Taku, who passed away this winter.

After being incapacitated both bears were given a physical, had blood samples taken, and weighed.

They were transported to their new digs and allowed to slowly come round.

Once they were let out into the new enclosure they started exploring the new digs while at the same time trying to get their 'sea legs' back as they werre still a bit woozy!
